"In a big city like Shanghai, people carefully protect themselves by keeping their distance from others. I see the umbrellas as their protection. In doing so, they create their own little world.

" Three people are sitting on two chairs and are protected from the rain by two umbrellas. The picture is composed in three parts—the foreground subjects, the chain and wide expanse of water and beyond to the city.

Yet, the person behind the camera is the one who created this tiny universe and gave it meaning through her artistic point-of-view. Most passers-by would never see this profound statement before them. That is the true beauty and communication inherent in the photographic arts.
