Jazz was not born in glitzy uptown clubs. Jazz was born in the streets of New Orleans. Jazz grew up in secluded downtown New York music joints, after hours, where black and white musicians had the opportunity to play together and share ideas. This painting is intended to capture one such jam session in New York City in 1959.
