Lying in a reflective depression, surrounded by distorted images of himself, the subject has spilled his guts. His mouth is open in an anguished howl of self-recrimination. The tray, separating him from the rich, green cloth, is hard and unforgiving, offering nothing but a mirrored surface, withholding both judgement and forgiveness. Remarkable in composition and execution, Confession is a marvelous example of the pastel artist's ability to capture a moment and hold it for us suspended, showing the details of life, light and action.
