Sarah Atkinson currently lives in
Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up in a rural farming community north of
the city. She began her love for painting at a very young age. Her father,
also an artist, encouraged her to pursue her passion. She spent much of her
childhood in his studio painting at his side.
Sarah studied fine arts at
the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Here she developed a deep
interest in figural studies and began to refine her contextual style of
painting. Although her drawings center on a figurative element, they have
evolved—incorporating alternative mediums such as bees wax, ash, coffee
grains, and tar.
Sarah's ability to capture a
timeless and seductive movement in her figures is offset against an organic,
often abstract backdrop. Amidst a sea of tar and beeswax, the pieces, in their
final state, stand as elegant, yet bittersweet works that emote an emotion of
their own. Sarah Atkinsons' works are held in private collections throughout
the United States, as well as internationally.
