CONTEMPORARY WORKS 2003-2004.
Approaching the canvas with
imagined focus, Willard quickly surrenders to the demands of color and light,
shape and content—revealing powerful abstract, often geometric, images. This
showcase of contemporary work pays homage to the pioneers of modern abstract
art—Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Joan Miro, Sam Francis, Jackson Pollack,
Ellsworth Kelly and others. Many of the paintings featured in this series are
more constructions—using layer-upon-layer of paint in lieu of the fluid stroke
of the brush. Rooted in the emergence of New Modernism, reflected in the art
and architecture of the early 1960s, this series presents unique and dramatic
color combinations that command the viewer’s eye while distracting the
emotions. As with his mentors, Willard chooses the expanse of the large
format canvas to lure the senses with visual authority.
Hap Willard was born in Atlanta,
Georgia, in 1952. He began painting while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in
1995. He has been a graphic designer and advertising art director for over
twenty-five years. His work is currently shown in galleries in San Diego, CA,
Raleigh, NC and Winston-Salem, NC.
His paintings are in private and
corporate collections in Santa Fe, San Diego, Oceanside, Atlanta, and Chicago.
