Rapidly becoming known as one of North
Carolina's finest artists, Phillip Philbeck grew up in Cleveland County. He
took art classes at Appalachian State University and Cleveland County
Community College, but he considers most of his artistic ability to be
self-taught.
Just having turned 32 years old,
Philbeck's talents seem to surpass his years. He is a realist with an
incredible attention to detail. Philbeck paints in both watercolors and oils.
Philbeck was influenced at an early age by Bob Timberlake. When he was in the
fifth grade, he saw a Timberlake book in the school library and knew that
painting was what he wanted to do. Philbeck says that he was also influenced
by Andrew Wyeth, John Constable and Jacob Van Ruisdael, however he considers
his rural upbringing to be his most important influence.
