Mandy Johnson, whose childhood drawings of peaches
were always colored hot pink, started her passion for art early, taking
inspiration from the animal menagerie on her family's farm in Scotland Neck,
North Carolina. Cups of coffee, dogs, cats, cows in a field—color is the only
rule that Mandy set for herself. It was always about the color.
College and a real-world art
education at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, got her rolling. She
took a brief 20-year break to seek higher education, teach art to middle
school students, and to raise her own daughter. Since 1998, she has enjoyed
her passion for art full-time, bringing her vision to everyday life in the
South—starting at 6 am when the light makes the colors of cows and cups of
coffee seem more than they really are. Always moving, the paths in her
paintings lead us to places caught in extreme repose. Color is the word and
only rule in Mandy's world.
