"Painting is life—it is for the artist to make the
paint and canvas live. It does not matter that it be recognizable in concept,
but in execution the work must come alive. On this plane, everyone can
understand... feel. To me theories, paint, brushes, canvas, textures—all are
merely a means, not an end."
Charles Stewart was born in
Toledo, Ohio in 1922. That makes him roughly 83 years young. For half of that
lifetime, he has studied art and painted. In 1945, he went to New York to
study art at the Art Students League, after serving in the military during
WWII. He studied painting and graphic arts with Will Bernet and sculpted with
John Havannes.
After travels to Mexico City, he
moved to Taos, New Mexico. Here his work took on the spiritual and symbolic
idioms of the Native American people. In 1983, Charles Stewart and his wife
Marilou, moved to Todos Santos, Mexico. He is credited with starting the Todos
Santos art movement. Todos Santos is now known worldwide as a thriving artist
colony. In 1986, the Smithsonian Institute of The Southwest began to archive
the work created by Charles Stewart in Taos, New Mexico, during his legendary
career there.
This archival perspective is
maintained by the Houston Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas. Charles
continues to produce exceptional paintings and sculpture. His works are sold
in Baja, Mexico and Heidelberg, Germany. Fine art reproductions of his
masterworks are now offered exclusively as Corporate Canvas Editions for the
first time.
